WILMINGTON – Defense was the name of the game in seventh-ranked Delaware Military Academy’s defeat of No. 4 Ursuline in a Wednesday night volleyball battle. The Seahawks won by set scores of 25-7, 23-25, 25-18 and 29-27.
Victoria Taylor was on her game early, as she helped the Seahawks overpower the Raiders in the first set. The second set started with more of the same, as Taylor had two early kills and an ace as DMA jumped out to an 8-2 lead.
The Raiders responded behind some great defense, led by Sam Davis, and kills from Corinne Furey and Taylor Wright, and they took a 12-11 lead. It went back and forth until the Raiders scored the win on an error.
The Seahawks went to work, as Taylor and Lindsay Wolfe helped push them to a 20-12 lead in the third. Libero Kirsten Longueira provided some great defense, boosting DMA to a 2-1 lead.
The fourth set was a dogfight, with both teams playing tight defense, leading to long rallies. Sam Davis made a spectacular diving dig on an attempted kill by Taylor, and that gave Ursuline a 19-18 lead. The Raiders had a couple of set points to extend the match, but service errors led to match point for the Seahawks. Ursuline fought off one match point, but the team’s last hit fell just wide, giving DMA the win.
Taylor led the way for the Seahawks with 16 kills, while Longueira had 35 digs. They improved to 9-4 on the season, winning their fourth in a row. DMA will host Newark Charter on Friday at 7 p.m.
Ursuline was led by Furey with 13 kills, and Wright added 11. Sam Davis collected 33 digs for the Raiders, who dropped to 6-3. They host Wilmington Charter on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
