CLAYMONT – Archmere came out of the halftime intermission in its Oct. 19 game against Glasgow nursing a 1-0 lead, but it didn’t take long for the Auks to assert themselves against the Dragons. Brian Neill and Andrew Rosenbaum teamed up for two virtually identical goals in the early minutes of the second half to lead the Auks to a 4-1 win.
Glasgow began the second half with possession, but Rosenbaum changed that with a steal near midfield. He sent the ball to his right to Neill, then moved into position a few yards outside the penalty box. Neill executed a pretty give-and-go, directing it back to Rosenbaum, who took a step and placed the ball perfectly to the right of Dragons goalkeeper Anthony Darden and inside the far post less than a minute into the half.
Four minutes later, a goal kick by Auks keeper Blake Parker sailed upfield and ended up on Neill’s foot in about the same place. Again, he fed Rosenbaum, who was waiting just as on his first goal, and again, the freshman knocked it past Darden into the netting just beyond the far post. That extended the Auks’ lead to 3-0, and they were in control on the way to their ninth victory against three defeats.
Archmere came out strong to open the game, but the team’s scoring opportunities were rejected for much of the first half. The Auks continually sent Zachary Dainton into the corner to the left of the Dragons’ net, but his crossing passes could not find paydirt.
They finally found a way to the net in the 19th minute. Rosenbaum was involved in this one as well, intercepting a Glasgow pass. He hit Liam Delaney with an outlet pass, and Delaney chipped it over the keeper for the score.
Most of Glasgow’s chances came from distance, but the Dragons nearly tied the contest on one of them. Junior Gilbert Amougou took a free kick from midfield in the 34th minute. The ball handcuffed Parker, slipping through his hands and rolling behind him. Parker recovered and was able to smother the ball before any harm could come. He added a leaning save on a curling shot two minutes after that by Jason Mejia-Flores.
Sean Murray gave Archmere a 4-0 lead on a penalty kick in the 70th minute, and Glasgow avoided the shutout when Cesar DelAngel scored in the 72nd.
Archmere, which outshot Glasgow, 15-8, travels to Dover for a meeting with the Senators Saturday at 7 p.m. Glasgow (4-7-1) hosts Howard at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
