CLAYMONT – Donning the lucky pink uniforms, the Archmere baseball team wrapped up its regular season with a 4-0 win over visiting St. Elizabeth on May 23. Colin Lynch had it going on for the Auks, tossing a complete-game four-hitter and picking up two hits with a run scored to boot.
Both the Auks (11-7) and the Vikings (11-7) appear to have done enough to be among the 20 teams that will make the postseason. The teams will have to wait until Wednesday night to find out if, when and where they will be playing next.
Lynch was outstanding, keeping St. Elizabeth guessing and benefiting from some timely defense. He walked Nate Thomas in the first inning, but Thomas did not advance past second base. Leadoff doubles by the Vikings in the third and fourth innings did not cost him. The Auks turned two double plays, including one started by Lynch that ended the top of the fifth inning.
St. Elizabeth starting pitcher Hayden Trimarco kept busy working out of trouble, but through the first four innings, he had allowed just one run. The Auks loaded the bases in the first with no outs on two walks sandwiched around a single, but Trimarco recovered to strike out the side, with two of those batters looking.
Archmere got one in the second, but it could have been more. Dan Matranga walked with one out and, after reaching second on a single, came around to score on an errant pickoff attempt. The Auks picked up two more singles to load the bases but could not plate another run.
Mike Dellose increased the lead to 3-0 in the fifth with a two-run double into right field. Tighe Watson drove in the final run, knocking in Lynch in the sixth.
St. Elizabeth has several impressive victories on its resume, including Salesianum (twice), Newark Charter and Mount Pleasant. Their losses include ranked teams St. Mark’s (twice), Appoquinimink and Milford, along with a 15-win Tower Hill squad.
The Auks can claim wins over Milford, Hodgson, Tower Hill and St. Elizabeth. They lost two close ones to top-ranked Conrad. Archmere is trending in the right direction, having won its last four.
