NEWARK — Catholic Youth Ministry welcomed a record 129 golfers to Deerfield Country Club on July 13 for its annual golf outing. The event helps make programming more affordable for young people from around the diocese.
One of the golfers this season was Wilmington native Justin Perillo. Perillo, who played three seasons with the Green Bay Packers in the National Football League, is a graduate of St. Catherine of Siena School near Prices Corner. A tight end, he is currently a free agent. The 25th edition of the tournament took place as so many others have, under a scorching sun. Over the last quarter century, the golfers have raised more than $1 million to support youth activities in the diocese.
Joe McNesby, who coordinates CYM athletics, said the proceeds help keep athletics and other events affordable for everyone who wants to participate.
The day includes more than golf. Participants enjoyed lunch and dinner, and each received a gift bag. On the course, they could take part in various contests. Back in the clubhouse, there was a silent auction.
McNesby said 38 of the golfers were first-timers at the CYM event. The first 14 were held at Brantwood Country Club in Elkton, Md., and Cavaliers Country Club hosted the last 10. CYM moved to Deerfield because it could accommodate a larger field.
