CLAYMONT – Archmere overcame a sluggish start on Oct. 13 at home against Tatnall, scoring once in each half to take a 2-0 win in nonconference boys soccer. The Auks remain hot and are now 4-0-1 in their last five.
The first half started at a laconic pace, with neither the Auks nor the Hornets generating a shot. Archmere finally sent a shot toward Tatnall keeper Pen Sailer in the 12th minute, but he was able to make the save. The Hornets established sustained possession midway through the half, and in the 21st minute they forced Auks keeper John Prosceno to make a diving save to keep the game scoreless.
The offense picked up, and the Auks were able to strike first in the 25th. Sam Gattuso took a pass from Zach Dainton 30 yards from the net, dribbled around a defender and sent a left-footed volley curling over Sailer and into the far side of the net.
The Auks nearly added another six minutes later. A through ball intended for Andrew Rosenbaum was smothered by Sailer before it could cause too much trouble. The Auks did add an insurance goal early in the second half, as Dainton scored with an assist to Will Schatzman.
The shots were 8-7 in favor of Archmere, as were corner kicks, 4-3. Prosceno and Sailer each were credited with five saves. The Auks (6-3-1) take their unbeaten streak into Thursday’s home match with Conrad at 3:45 p.m. Tatnall (1-8) also plays Thursday, visiting Sanford at 4.
