ALAPOCAS – St. Elizabeth scored the first two goals of the game, but after that Lake Forest took over in a 16-7 win in nonconference boys lacrosse on April 4 at Alapocas Run.
The game began in a light drizzle that steadily increased in intensity, but that had little effect on the offense. The Vikings opened the scoring while on a man advantage following a penalty on Lake’s Benjamin Moore. Moore had barely left the field before Kevin Marchioni beat the Spartans’ goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead just minutes into the game.
Marchioni doubled the Vikings’ lead a few minutes later. After a save by St. Elizabeth keeper Kaleem Muhammad-Bey, Marchioni gained possession and streaked upfield, again finding the net.
Lake Forest responded with five unanswered goals to take the lead for good. The Spartans’ first goal was a pretty one, as Logan Johnson found Carter Kenton wide left of the goal from behind the net, and Kenton delivered the ball inside to Parker Sard, who beat Muhammad-Bey. Lake tied the game on its first power play, with Sard getting the assist on a tally by Moore.
A minute later, Moore had the ball again, this time to the right of the keeper. He carried the ball out front, faked a pass and scored from close range to give his team the 3-2 lead.
The Spartans increased the lead to 4-2 thanks to Kenton. He took a pass, curled around the net and tucked the ball in. The final goal of the streak went to Sard. This time, Muhammad-Bey wandered behind his net in an attempt to gain possession, but the ball was knocked loose by Lake and sent out front to Sard, who had nothing between him and the twine.
Vincent Corbino stopped the bleeding for St. Elizabeth with the final score of the first period. The Vikings trailed, 5-3, after one.
St. Elizabeth had another man advantage to open the second, but it was Lake Forest that took advantage with a shorthanded goal. The Vikings were within three at the half, trailing 8-5, as the teams sought shelter from the steady rain.
St. E’s was down four heading into the final quarter, but Lake put the game away, outscoring the home team, 6-1, in the fourth.
Marchioni finished with four goals for the Vikings, who dropped to 0-2. They have little time to dwell on this game, as a trip to Caravel looms Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Lake Forest won its third game against just one loss. The Spartans, whose final statistics were not available, travel to Delmar on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
