MIDDLETOWN – Top-ranked Padua edged No. 4 Appoquinimink, 1-0, in a top-five Division I girls soccer match on April 12.
The game’s lone goal came in the 11th minute, when Emilia Ryjewski scored off a great feed from Lindsay Machamer. The Pandas kept up the pressure most of the first half, earning five corner kicks.
Jags keeper Kiyanna Gill made two diving stops – in the 26th and 28th minutes – to keep it 1-0. The first was on a nice setup by Machamer, who found Ashlee Brentlinger, but Gill got her fingers on it to punch it out of play. Two minutes later, freshman Riley Hickox sent a shot that appeared ticketed for the upper left 90, but Gill grabbed it.
Appo got its offense going in the second half as play evened out. The Jaguars had a quality chance in the 58th minute, but a shot went wide.
Padua outshot the Jags, 12-6, and had an 8-2 advantage on corner kicks. The Pandas (3-2-1) ended a two-match losing streak, although both setbacks came against teams ranked in the top 10 in the country. They face Ursuline on April 21 at noon at the DE Turf Sports Complex in Frederica.
The Jags (6-1) got 11 saves from Gill. They host Concord on April 24 at 3:30 p.m.
