MILLTOWN – William Hoffman of St. Mark’s High School and Joseph DiGregorio of Archmere Academy have been named the recipients of the 2017 Michael DeLucia Sportsmanship Award, presented annually to a senior football player from a Delaware Catholic high school. The award, which has been given for 46 years, goes to a player “who has exemplified outstanding performance, attitude and character on and off the field.”
They received their trophies at St. Mark’s on Dec. 21.
Hoffman was a mainstay on the offensive line and at linebacker for the Spartans, who finished 6-4. A multi-sport athlete, he also plays basketball and golf. DiGregorio was a two-year starter at quarterback for the Auks, who narrowly missed the postseason this year at 7-3. He is also a member of the lacrosse team.
The award was presented by Tom DeLucia. He and his wife, Pat, of Wilmington, established the award in honor of their son, Michael, who died from meningitis in 1971 at age 18 months.
