CLAYMONT – Archmere took a 2-1 lead midway through the first half, then held off the Conrad attack throughout the second half in Diamond State Athletic Conference field hockey on Oct. 14 in Claymont.
Lauren Ross opened the scoring for the Auks at the 18:12 mark, but it took Conrad just two and a half minutes to answer as Lexie Edelson found the back of the cage.
Archmere earned a pair of free hits around 10 minutes into the half, and they converted the second to take the lead. An Auks player rolled the ball into the crease, and Conrad goalie Taylor McDermott missed on an attempt to clear it. Archmere’s Taylor Risnychoke took advantage of her good fortune by lifting the ball into the net with 9:38 remaining.
Conrad had the better of the opportunities for the remainder of the afternoon, but Archmere did not give up another goal. Conrad’s best chance to tie in the first half came off a penalty corner with 5:44 to go, but Auks goalie Mady McDougal made a fine save.
Leah DaCosta missed wide on a shot early in the second, and Conrad maintained possession after that. One pass into the crease was cleared by the Auks’ defense, and another chance, this time the result of a Conrad steal, was deflected wide. McDougal’s final tough save came with 4:30 left, when she booted a ball out of harm’s way.
McDougal finished with seven saves for the Auks, who improved to 7-2 with their fifth straight win. They are back on the field Tuesday at home at 3:45 vs. Wilmington Christian.
Conrad’s McDermott stopped four shots. Conrad (7-3) had a four-game winning streak stopped and will try to start another one against Mount Pleasant on Wednesday at 3:45 p.m. at Hockessin Montessori School.
