Father Michael Angeloni, a former associate pastor at Church of the Holy Child in north Wilmington, is serving one year in prison for stealing more than $300,000 from an elderly parishioner to feed his gambling addiction.

Superior Court Judge Diane Clarke Streett imposed the sentence in late March. Following his release from prison, Father Angeloni will be on probation and will be required to repay the victim $305,425. He also is not to have any contact with the victim, casinos or other gambling establishments; must receive gambling treatment; and must obtain a mental health evaluation and follow any recommended treatment, according to the judge.

Father Angeloni was indicted last August following a five-minth investigation by the Delaware attorney general’s office, which had received a report of suspicious activity on the victim’s account. He pleaded guilty on Nov. 17, 2011. Bishop Malooly suspended his prietly faculties at the time of the indictment.

Father Angeloni, 62, also admitted to taking money from the parish collections.

Ordained in 1975, the priest has served at St. John the Apostle in Milford, St. Mary of the Assumption in Hockessin, and Holy Family and St. John the Baptist-Holy Angels, both in Newark.
