CLAYMONT – St. Mark’s scored seven runs in the first three innings to defeat Archmere, 8-3, in nonconference baseball on April 8. The top of the order did the damage for the Spartans.
Leadoff hitter Tyler Kaczmarczyk drew a walk, and Brian Gilardi singled to right to put runners on first and second. Andrew Reich moved them up on a groundout, and Kaczmarczyk scored on a groundout by Matt Theodorakis. Sean Gilardi singled in Brian to give St. Mark’s a 2-0 lead after one.
The Spartans went to work again in the second. Kaczmarczyk singled with one out, and Brian Gilardi got his second hit. Theodorakis knocked both in with a single, and Sean Gilardi followed with an RBI single to give the Spartans a 5-0 lead.
Archmere got one back in the bottom of the second as Colin Lynch led off with a single and Nickolas Talley worked a walk. Lynch crossed the plate before Talley was tagged out in a rundown.
The Spartans pushed two more across the plate in the third with two outs. Kaczmarczyk was involved again as he walked and stole second. Brian Gilardi and Andrew Reich followed with singles to score Kaczmarczyk. Theodorakis came through once more, knocking in Gilardi for a 7-1 advantage.
The Auks scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but St. Mark’s added an insurance run in the seventh. The Spartans loaded the bases on a walk, hit by pitch and single, then Brian Gilardi drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
Kaczmarczyk said it was important to get things going.
“I try and set the tone early by getting on base and letting my teammates knock me in,” he said.
Reich earned his third win for the 5-0 Spartans with five solid innings. They are scheduled to play Appoquinimink on Saturday at 1 p.m., although the weather doesn’t look good. The 3-1 Auks will face Concord on the road Tuesday at 3:45 p.m.
