CLAYMONT – Brian J. Zhang, a senior at Archmere Academy, has been named the recipient of a National Merit $2,500 Scholarship. The announcement was made Wednesday morning by the National Merit Scholarship Corp.

Zhang, of Wilmington, is one of 2,500 high school seniors from across the country to receive the award. They were chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 finalists in the program. The scholars were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors based on academic record, including the difficulty of subjects studied and grades earned; scores from two standardized tests; contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay; and recommendations written by a high school official.

Nearly all finalists from this round are receiving their single-payment scholarships directly from the NMSC. An earlier round of 1,000 winners of corporate-sponsored awards was announced in April, and on May 28 and July 14, 4,500 college-sponsored scholarship winners will be revealed.

Zhang has listed engineering as his probably career field.
