Auks girls soccer takes double OT thriller from Caravel

CLAYMONT – Archmere’s third-ranked girls soccer team hosted back-to-back Division II champions Caravel on March 22, and the Auks served notice that they will be a factor in the title talk this season. The Auks defeated the Buccaneers in double overtime when sophomore Dara Dawson scored off a pass from senior Sullivan Boulden in the 98th minute for a 1-0 victory.

“I saw (Boulden) coming down the side, and I knew I had to have the perfect shot,” Dawson said. “It seemed as if it was in slow motion.”

soccerCaravel controlled most of the first half, but the Auks got a decent first look on a chance by Leah DaCosta had an early opportunity. Archmere goalkeeper Kyra Giakas then made her biggest save of the game, diving to the far post and stopping a breakaway chance for Caravel. The Bucs thought they had one in the 63rd minute, but they were called offside, and the goal did not count. Both teams had a couple of corner kicks in overtime but couldn’t convert, setting up Dawson’s winner.

Giakas said it was important to the Auks to get the defending champs in the opener. “We wanted to see where we were, and our team played great today.”

The Auks are 1-0 and next play at Delaware Military Academy on April 7 at 3:45 p.m. The Buccaneers (0-1) also play DMA next, as they host the Seahawks on April 4 at 7:15 p.m.
