CLAYMONT – Archmere scored three touchdowns in the second period, including two within a minute, in a 46-8 win over St. Elizabeth in the regular-season finale for both teams Saturday afternoon in Claymont. Although their 6-4 record won’t be enough to get them into the playoffs, the Auks did finish the season on a high note with five consecutive wins. The postseason matchups will be announced Sunday.
The Vikings, who finished the season 4-6, have just six seniors on their roster. They were coming off an emotional win over St. Mark’s, but could do little to stop the Archmere offense.
Archmere’s special teams was responsible for setting up two of the touchdowns, including the first, which was preceded by a blocked punt by senior Ben Revak. The Auks took over at the Vikings’ 8-yard line. Auks junior Pat Udovich scored the first of his three touchdowns with a 3-yard burst with 4:38 to go in the first quarter.
In the second, senior quarterback Chris Dewees put the Auks in great position with a 28-yard run that set his team up at the St. Elizabeth 26. Runs by Udovich and sophomore Daniel Bark took the ball to the 10, and Dewees found senior Greg McCord in the end zone with a scoring pass. McCord’s rolling catch made it 14-0.
The Auks increased the lead by six on their next possession. A fake punt by the Vikings did not work, and the Auks took over at the St. Elizabeth 31. Dewees found Revak in the corner of the end zone a few plays later with a 15-yard strike. Revak managed to get a foot down in bounds with 3:18 left until half. The point after was no good.
Archmere found itself with the ball in great field position on the ensuing kickoff. The ball bounced and eluded the Vikings, and an alert Auk fell on it at St. Elizabeth’s 8. Udovich ran it in from two, and the Auks’ second score in 39 seconds gave them a halftime advantage of 27 points.
Udovich scored his third touchdown in the second half, which also featured scores from senior Nick Udovich, who caught a 59-yard pass from Dewees, and senior Jake Mottola, who ran one in from 75 yards. In addition, Revak blocked another punt, giving him the Archmere record for blocks in a career.
St. Elizabeth avoided a shutout with a third quarter touchdown. Sophomore Chris Cropper did the honors with a 65-yard scamper in the fourth.
