WILMINGTON — Alexis Bromwell scored off the opening tip, and St. Elizabeth had its full-court press working early in a 57-41 win over St. Mark’s on Jan. 21.
When the Spartans beat the press with long passes down the court, Vikings eighth-grader Julie McCarron was the eraser, registering four blocks on the evening. A three-pointer by Bromwell gave St. Elizabeth a 14-8 lead, but St. Mark’s Kendra Schweizer nailed a triple of her own to cut it to 14-11 late in the first. Sarah Metz got that back and added a two-point field goal as the Vikings led, 19-11, at the end of the first.
The second quarter belonged to St. Elizabeth. Bromwell hit a deep three-pointer and a driving layup as St. Elizabeth outscored St. Mark’s, 17-7, on the way to a 36-18 halftime lead.
The second half started with a McCarron jumper, but the Spartans went on an eight-point run, highlighted by a long three-pointer by Kaitlyn Wolff. It was 38-26 when Bromwell hit another three to begin a 6-0 run, and the third ended with the Vikings in the lead, 44-26.
After McCarron opened the final stanza with a three-point shot, the Spartans had another eight-point streak, including two baskets by Delaney Carey. St. Elizabeth brought back its full-court press and forced some steals to put the game away.
Bromwell led the victors with 17 points, and McCarron added 10. The Vikings improved to 7-2 and are scheduled to host Howard on Monday at 6:45 p.m. For St. Mark’s, Schweizer had nine, while Carey and Wolff each scored eight. The Spartans (4-7) are off until Jan. 29, when they host Ursuline at 7:30 p.m.
