WILMINGTON – Ursuline and Caravel met Wednesday afternoon in an important nonconference field hockey match as both teams prepare for the postseason. It was the Buccaneers who came out on top, taking a 3-1 road win.
The Bucs got on the board 6:45 into the contest on a goal by junior Olivia Duarte, who took a great feed by Lauren Phillips. Caravel controlled most of the play in the half and had some great chances, but Ursuline keeper Kate Casey kept her team in it.
The Raiders, who did not register a shot on goal in the first half, looked to keep the score 1-0, but with just 3:53 left in the half, junior Jillian Lucey scored off a pass from freshman Sydney Keid.
Ursuline managed some early pressure in the second half, but freshman goalkeeper Summer Stewart turned them away. Caravel regained control and had a number of penalty corners, but could not convert. With 6:12 left in the contest, Duarte scored unassisted to make it 3-0. The Raiders got on the board with 3:31 to go on a goal by junior Shayla Bartoli.
Caravel had a 12-7 shot advantage and had 10 penalty corners to Ursuline’s three. The Raiders (7-3-1) host St. Elizabeth on Friday at 3:45 p.m., while the Buccaneers improved to 8-3 and travel to Archmere on Saturday for a noon start.
