WILMINGTON – Caravel and Ursuline needed overtime to settle their battle on Oct. 19, which is not surprising considering the Buccaneers entered the contest ranked third in the state in Division II and the Raiders No. 4, according to 302Sports.com. Caravel went home victorious, getting a goal from Brynn Hawley in the extra session for the 2-1 win.
Early in the overtime, Caravel’s Sydney Keld took control of the ball near the end line to the left of the cage. Keld shoveled the ball past the keeper to the front of the net, where Hawley stood all alone and ended the game.
There was no scoring in the first half as the defenses were in control. Ursuline earned a pair of penalty corners early in the half, but two shots from Jordan Kenney and another from Caroline Taylor were kick-saved by Bucs keeper Karli Cauley. Caravel picked up a nice opportunity of its own later in the half, but Raiders keeper Cleo Troy was equal to the task.
The offensive opportunities increased as the second half opened, but neither team could score until Kenney converted a pass from Juliana Copeman with 18:32 remaining in regulation. That lead lasted just 81 seconds, as Hailey Ward dribbled into the scoring circle and found Sydney Keld, who drilled it home.
Each team had chances to end it in regulation. Ward missed a goal by inches, and Ursuline’s Teddie Elliman took a high shot that bounced off the crossbar.
The Raiders had eight shots, the Buccaneers six, but Caravel held a 7-5 edge in penalty corners. Ursuline (8-2) plays the third of five straight at home on Saturday, hosting St. Elizabeth at 11 a.m. Caravel remained unbeaten at 9-0-2 but faces perhaps its toughest test of the regular season on Monday night at 6 p.m. when Division I power Polytech visits Bear.
