Catholic Youth Ministry recently held championship events in softball and track and field. The results were provided by the CYM office.
Softball
St. Mary Magdalen defeated Christ the Teacher, 10-0, on May 21 to win the diocesan championship at Delaware Technical and Community College in Stanton. The Bulldogs were led by pitcher Sarah Raab, who struck out 12 batters and surrendered just one hit. Julia Bacci broke the game open in the fourth inning with a bases-loaded triple. St. Mary Magdalen finished the season undefeated.
Track and field
St. Elizabeth and Holy Angels won boys titles, while St. Elizabeth and Immaculate Heart of Mary took the crowns in girls action at the 2014 championships, which were held May 18 at Baynard Stadium in Wilmington.
For the boys, St. Elizabeth defeated runner up St. John the Beloved, 245-199, in Division I, while Holy Angels scored a 136-114 decision over IHM in Division II.
Three boys records were set. Andrew Avila of St. Mary Magdalen won the sixth-grade 1600-meter run in a time of 5:11.10, breaking the old record, set in 2010, by more than 12 seconds. The St. Elizabeth fifth-grade 4×200 relay team of Demetrius Lyn, Alex Rollo, Christopher Covington and Emmett Simpler won its event in 2:02.79; the old record, set in 2008, was 2:03.09. Finally, St. John the Beloved eighth-grader Nicholas Merlino’s long jump of 19 feet, 10.0 inches was better than the 2011 record by six and a half inches.
Division I girls winner St. Elizabeth won by a 193-122 score over All Saints, while IHM took care of Ursuline, 185-150, in Division II.
Two records fell in the girls’ division. Lydia Olivere of St. Mary Magdalen won the eighth-grade 1600-meter run in 5:15.26, blowing away the old mark, set in 2010, by more than 21 seconds. All Saints’ Nicole Harris captured the eighth-grade 800-meter run in 2:20.05, breaking the 2002 record by nearly seven seconds.
