This week’s high school basketball is light as the regular season comes to a close this week. Even with games rescheduled from earlier this season, the Catholic teams are done by Wednesday. First up: the boys’ schedule this week.
Tuesday: St. Elizabeth at Newark, 5:15 p.m. A win for the Vikings against a good Newark team would help their seeding in the state tournament. Newark is 12-6 and has won seven in a row, clinching the Blue Hen Conference Flight A crown. St. Elizabeth will make the tournament thanks to its strong schedule.
Salesianum at Wilmington Friends, 5:30 p.m. The Sals are coming off a productive weekend when they beat St. Mark’s and Archmere. The regular-season finale comes against a Friends team struggling at 4-14. Salesianum is on track to be the top seed in the state tournament.
St. Mark’s at Charter, 5:30 p.m. The Spartans are coming off a tough 39-34 loss to Salesianum and finish the season against a much-improved Charter team. With only 19 games on the schedule, this is 12-6 St. Mark’s final game. The Force are 11-7.
Archmere at Wilmington Christian, 6 p.m. The Auks looks for the sweep against Wilmington Christian, along with a 16-4 record and the likely first-round tournament bye that would come with it.
Thursday: St. Elizabeth at Tatnall, 5:15 p.m. The teams meet in the regular-season finale in a game that was snowed out last Thursday. A win against the young Hornets would send St. E’s into the state tournament on the right note.
Can’t forget the girls, who have a few big games of their own this week.
Tuesday: St. Elizabeth at Glasgow, 5 p.m. The Vikings have been off since their loss to Ursuline last Tuesday.
Tower Hill at Archmere, 5:30 p.m. The Auks finish the regular season against the 3-15 Hillers. A win could earn the Auks a first-round bye.
Middletown at St. Thomas More, 5:30 p.m. The Ravens host the Cavaliers, who are 6-13.
Wilmington Charter at St. Mark’s, 7:15 p.m. The Spartans look to end an eight-game losing streak in their final home game. The Force are 14-4 and will be readying for a game vs. Caravel the next night.
Caravel at Padua, 7:30 p.m. Padua looks for revenge after losing the Caravel, 55-44, at the Diamond State Classic. The Pandas have won four straight games and are playing for seeding in the state tournament. Caravel is ranked third in the state.
Wednesday: Ursuline at Sanford, 4 p.m. This is easily the game of the week as the top two girls teams meet in what could be a preview of the state final. Ursuline has won 12 straight games, while Sanford’s streak was at 15 heading into Monday’s game vs. Hodgson. The Warriors’ only loss was to St. Elizabeth in mid-December. Sanford’s gym could best be described as cozy, so get there early. Catholic school fans know about Ursuline’s Adrianna Hahn, but Sanford has a star player of its own in Alison Lewis.
Wilmington Christian at St. Thomas More, 4:45 p.m. The Ravens celebrate Senior Night and go for their fifth win on the year
Appoquinimink at Padua, 7:15 p.m. The Pandas and Jaguars will make up a game postponed from last week. Appo is 11-7 and will be in the state tournament. They will looking for some tournament points here.
Delaware Military Academy at St. Elizabeth, 7:15 p.m. Viking Nation looks to send its seniors out in style. DMA is 10-9.
The girls’ state tournament starts on Feb. 25. The top eight seeds will have a bye until the second round, which is set for Feb. 27. The boys kick things off on Feb. 26 and again on the 28th. Pairings will be announced this weekend after all of the regular-season games have been played.
