WILMINGTON – Salesianum soccer had a great day on Oct. 13, beginning with the presentation of a $1,000 check to the families of the Wilmington firefighters who lost their lives a few weeks ago. They continued with a 5-0 defeat of archrival St. Mark’s on senior night for nine players.

Senior Jason Blackwell scored just three minutes in to give the Sals a 1-0 lead. Salesianum controlled the play in the half but just couldn’t finish. Gavin Ford missed two shots wide during that time, and St. Mark’s goalkeeper Thomas Gibb made several key saves to keep his team within one.

soccerThen, in the 37th minute, Casey Kurlej scored to make it 2-0 going into the half. The scoring continued after intermission as Andrew Gantert tallied in the 48th minute.

The Sals controlled possession all night, but the Spartans’ defense did a good job of keeping the Sals’ shot total low. Jack Leonard and Kurlej added goals in the final minutes for the final margin.

Salesianum coach Scott Mosier was happy with Blackwell’s early goal.

“We like to play a possession match. To get an early goal for a change helped our defense,” he said.

The Sals improved to 8-1-1 and play at second-ranked Appoquinimink on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Spartans (5-2-3) are in the toughest part of their schedule and travel to Wilmington Charter on Tuesday for a 3:45 p.m. start.
