First-half surge lifts Spartans into soccer quarterfinals

BEAR – St. Mark’s scored four first-half goals en route to a 4-0 shutout of No. 10 Hidgson in Division II boys soccer first-round action on Wednesday night at Caravel Academy.

soccerThe seventh-seeded Spartans scored early on a long throw-in from Chris Ludman that was headed in by Michael Scalia in the sixth minute. The team kept the pressure on and added a second goal on a 29-yard free kick from Michael Ziomek that hit the upper right corner of the net.

St. Mark’s was at it again in late in the half when another Ludman throw-in glancd off the keeper’s hand and was buried by Mason Mostrom. Two minutes later, Mostrom headed in a Ludman throw for the final score of the night.

The Spartans advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday night, meeting No. 2 Caravel at 7 p.m. at Appoquinimink High School.
