WILMINGTON – Matt Rubincam, the head boys basketball coach at Charter School of Wilmington for the past five years, has been named to the same position at St. Elizabeth High School. Rubincam informed Charter of his decision to leave on July 5.
Rubincam succeeds Dick Rago, who retired this spring after 30 years leading the Vikings. Rubincam was an assistant to Rago for 12 years and coached at St. Elizabeth for 19.
St. Elizabeth athletic director Joe Papili said there were a number of applicants for what is seen as one of the state’s more desirable coaching jobs.
“Matt has experience as a seasoned coach, educator and mentor and is heavily ingrained in the school community, all qualities the administration and selection committee were looking for in our next coach,” Papili said.
“We are confident that he will provide strong leadership to our student athletes and continue the fine tradition of our basketball program.”
The Vikings finished 14-7 last season, falling to Milford in the first round of the state playoffs. They played their final three games without junior Jordan Money, their leading scorer. Money was injured during a win over Charter.
Rubincam began his coaching career at St. Elizabeth in 1992 with the freshman boys team. He took over the junior varsity in 1993 and remained in that capacity until 1999, when he was promoted to associate head coach. He took the Charter position in 2011.
He is a 1990 graduate of Salesianum School and earned a degree in criminal justice from West Chester University. He has a master’s in public administration from Wilmington University and is working on his doctoral degree in education at the same institution.
