WILMINGTON – The Padua Academy cheerleading team has been around for just three years, yet the squad has found success almost immediately.

After winning a state title March 2, the team continued its winning ways March 21-23 at the Cheer and Dance Extreme grand national competition in Virginia Beach, Va., taking first place among the four teams in its division. It also earned the title of grand champion with the highest score in the high school division, which consisted of 13 teams.

“This team worked very hard to win the championship title in only our second year competing at the state level,” head coach Maria Catalina said. “And to follow that with two national championship banners is just a dream come true.”

The state championship was held at McKean High School. Padua’s win broke St. Mark’s six-year stranglehold on the crown. Padua also won two competitions during February.
