Red Lion downs Archmere in softball opener

CLAYMONT – Red Lion pounded out 12 hits, led by Kaylee Hazewski, who went 2-for-4, as the Lions defeated Archmere, 9-2, March 23 in nonconference softball action.

After a scoreless first inning, Red Lion played small ball and capitalized on Auks errors to take a 3-0 lead. Two of those scored on a safety squeeze as they beat the throw when Archmere tried to get the out at first.

softballRed Lion added three more in the third as Noelle Holliday had a double and Taylor Beres a run-scoring single. Hazewski led off the fourth with a home run over the center field fence to make it 7-0.

Archmere got on the board in the fourth as Kayla Murray led off with a double and scored on a single by Mady McDougal. The Auks added their second run in the sixth, but Red Lion got both runs back in the final inning on a two-RBI triple from Hazewski.

Archmere (0-1) hosts St. Elizabeth on Wednesday at 3:45 p.m., while Red Lion (1-0) welcomes Immaculate Conception (N.J.) on April 2 at 2 p.m.
