BRANDYWINE HUNDRED – Brandywine took a 6-4 lead over Salesianum three minutes into Feb. 10’s nonconference boys basketball game. By the time the Bulldogs scored again, the visiting Sals had put nine straight points on the board and were never threatened in a 64-37 win.
The Sals had lost three straight and four of their last five against some of the state’s better competition. They sit at 8-7 heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.
They led, 13-8, when Juwel Campbell hit the first of his three three-point shots. From there, Salesianum steadily pulled away, building a 15-point halftime lead. Freshman Tariq Ingraham, who did not start, made his presence felt inside during the second quarter, scoring five points, including three of four from the free throw line. In a sign of what kind of night it was for the Sals, Campbell’s second triple looked to miss considerably, but it banked off the glass and through the twine.
The lead grew throughout the third quarter as Salesianum coach Brendan Haley took the opportunity to get his entire roster playing time. The Sals continued to dial long-distance, hitting three of their seven three-pointers during the third. Two came from Joe Nowak.
The offensive chances were in large part due to the outstanding defense employed by the Sals. Their zone trap gave the Bulldogs fits all night, prompting them into numerous turnovers. Six Salesianum players scored during the third period; for the game, all 12 players reached the scoring column.
The lopsided nature of the contest overshadowed the performance of Brandywine’s Jacob Hunt, who scored nine of his team-leading 11 points in the second half.
Ingraham led the Sals with 13 points, including seven of eight from the free throw line. Breyon Holmes showed nice touch from the field and finished with 12 points, while Campbell added 10. Salesianum stays on the road, traveling to archrival St. Mark’s on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
Lemmuel Glover added nine for the Bulldogs (2-15). They are right back in action Thursday at 5:30 p.m. when Christiana visits.
