WILMINGTON – Salesianum is the top-ranked soccer team in Delaware, and the Sals have the schedule to match. The team suffered its second straight setback, this time a 1-0 double-overtime loss to undefeated Washington Township, one of New Jersey’s better teams. This followed a loss on Saturday to St. Benedict Prep, the No. 1 team in the country.

The Sals started fast on Senior Night as sophomore Gavin Ford got behind the Washington Township defense, but he was stopped by a diving goalkeeper. Ford managed two more quality shots in the first half, but he could not score, and the first 40 minutes ended scoreless.

soccerWashington Township (11-0-1) controlled the play in the second half, with two shots hitting posts and two more the crossbar. Ford found himself with another chance in the 74th minute, this time shooting just wide.

In overtime, Salesianum goalkeeper Gavin Campbell punched away a shot off a corner kick. The Sals had a corner kick of their own at the end of the first OT period, but the whistle blew with the ball in the air.

The game continued until the 94th minute, when Washington Township senior Will Connelly pounced on a loose ball and beat Campbell to the far post.

Salesianum is now 6-3-1 and travels to St. Mark’s for a prime-time meeting Thursday at 7.
