WILMINGTON – It was Senior Night at Salesianum, and the Sals soccer team sent their veterans out in style, defeating archrival St. Mark’s, 7-0, at Baynard Stadium.
Looking to end a two-game losing streak, both shutouts, the Sals got on the board early when Conor Samuels buried one past a diving goalkeeper in the 13th minute. Five minutes later, Jordan MacFarlane sprinted down the left side and beat Spartans keeper John Perry for a 2-0 lead.
They added one off a two-on-one break that saw Trevor Clare feed Jacob Meyer for the third tally. Salesianum put a final score on the board before halftime as Meyer got the assist this time on the goal by James Strine.
St. Mark’s had one great scoring opportunity in the first half, but keeper Jake McAteer rejected the attempt with a diving stop.
Sallies kept the scoring going in the second half. MacFarlane scored again in the 44th minute, and Meyer followed suit with his second a few minutes later. Bryce Wallace finished the scoring with a goal in the 63rd minute.
Salesianum, which had 14 shots to St. Mark’s 4, improved to 4-3-2 on the season. The Sals host William Penn Saturday at 1 p.m. St. Mark’s dropped to 3-7 and will travel to second-ranked Charter School of Wilmington on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
