BRANDYWINE HUNDRED – Salesianum won its third game in a row on Jan. 18, but it took overtime. The Sals defeated Downingtown East (Pa.) in the final game of the Concord Classic, 52-49.
Juwel Campbell scored four points in a back-and-forth first quarter, which was dominated by defense and ended with the Cougars leading, 10-8. East built its lead in the second, as Garrett Baruch scored an old-fashioned three-point play and Wilt Montgomery hit a three-point shot to give the Cougars a 22-17 advantage.
Campbell cut a point off the lead with a free throw, and after a defensive stop, he heaved a shot from half court that went off the glass and in to make Downingtown East’s halftime lead only 22-21.
Salesianum went into the fourth quarter down, 33-29, but that is when freshman big man Tariq Ingraham took over. He scored on a powerful dunk to open the quarter, which seemed to give his team a boost. The Sals went to a full-court press and, off a steal, Ingraham scored to tie the game at 33.
The teams went back and forth until two Ingraham baskets inside gave the Sals a 43-41 lead. Two free throws by Campbell extended the lead to four. The Cougars’ Vaughn Jennings hit a three to cut the deficit to one, and after two free throws by Salesianum freshman Trevon Alderman, East’s Ethan Bertolami drilled a three-pointer with 20 seconds to go, sending the game to overtime.
Ingraham opened the extra session with the only field goal, and the Sals added two free throws to take a four-point lead. Ingraham, however, fouled out shortly after that, and Downingtown East hit both free throws to cut it to 51-49. Jamal Whittlesey made a big free throw to send the Sals’ advantage back to three points, and an attempt to tie at the buzzer was short.
Campbell led the Sals with 13, while Ingraham added 12. They improved to 6-3 and host archrival St. Mark’s on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
