Restaurant teams with St. E’s for scholarship fund
WILMINGTON — Café Napoli on Kirkwood Highway is teaming up with St. Elizabeth High School to raise money for a scholarship fund named for a late graduate.
On Jan. 27, the restaurant will donate a portion of its proceeds to the Michael Ryan Fitzpatrick Scholarship Fund when patrons mention they are dining for the fund. Fitzpatrick died in June 2003 at age 19. Jan. 27 would have been his 32nd birthday.

‘Tuck’ Mulrooney, former CYO official, dies at 91
WILMINGTON — Francis T. “Tuck” Mulrooney, who was a longtime official with the diocesan Catholic Youth Organization, the predecessor of Catholic Youth Ministry, died Dec. 31. He was 91.
Mulrooney, a Wilmington native who graduated from St. Ann’s School, was the state program director for CYO. During his tenure, he created a girls’ sports league, a parochial football league for elementary students and a four-city basketball competition. At one point, he supervised 139 teams and more than 1,000 athletes competing in 15 baseball, basketball, bowling and softball leagues.
He was also a founding member of the Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame in 1976, working to raise the funds to build the hall, which is located at Frawley Stadium.
Mulrooney served in World War II, earning several citations. He was devoted to his late wife, Betsy, St. Joseph’s University and his faith. In the 1950s, he organized a Marian rally in Wilmington that attracted 30,000 in its second year, and he attended retreats at the Malvern (Pa.) Retreat House for 62 years.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Ann Church on Jan. 6. Burial was at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Cemetery, Greenville.
St. Elizabeth High School collecting Christmas cards
WILMINGTON – Wondering what to do with those Christmas cards? St. Elizabeth High School’s Jefferson Awards Foundation Students in Action team is sponsoring its annual card collection until Jan. 17 to benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Ranch in Arizona.
Collection boxes are available at the back of St. Elizabeth Church and in the main hall of the school.
“We ask that any cards being donated not include personal pictures anywhere on them,” faculty moderator Jordan Ashby said. “Please do not rip off the backs to the cards, as this is a therapeutic activity the children at the ranch will complete.”
Former coach returns to lead Ss. Peter and Paul girls lax
EASTON, Md. — Mike Morse, who coached girls lacrosse at Ss. Peter and Paul High School from 2005-12, has returned to the Eastern Shore school to lead the program again.
Morse posted a 104-18 record during his first stint, including seven Eastern Shore Interscholastic Athletic Conference championships. He was also the ESIAC coach of the year three times.
At Ss. Peter and Paul, he coached five U.S. Lacrosse All-Americans and 28 U.S. Lacrosse Academic All-Americans, and he sent 25 former players to NCAA programs.
Morse has brought in Julie Morse and Megan Wilbert as his assistants. Morse, a 2011 Ss. Peter and Paul alumna, was a four-year starter at Loyola University. Wilbert, who graduated from Towson University, has an extensive coaching background.
Knitting Club works with Knights of Columbus
DOVER – The Knitting Club at Holy Cross School in Dover presented 40 knit hats to the Knights of Columbus as part of its community outreach program. The Knights distributed the hats at the InterFaith Men’s Shelter on Loockerman Street in downtown Dover.
Members of the club also attended the Alex’s Lemonade Stand charity Christmas party in Philadelphia on Dec. 12, where they presented more than 100 hats to childhood cancer patients.
The club was recognized last year as Dover’s top community service project. It includes 36 students in first through eighth grade.
St. Thomas More students help families at Christmas
MAGNOLIA — Students at St. Thomas More Academy accepted a challenge from the Holy Cross Church giving tree, as four families had expressed wishes for new bicycles.
The students raised enough money not only for the bikes, but for helmets and other accessories. There was some leftover money, and principal Rachael Casey and theology teacher Ashley Solecki went shopping for clothing and toys for two additional families.
“The act of giving as a student community demonstrates and advances our mission of promoting Catholic values and Gospel teachings,” Casey said.
Immaculata offers new grants
Immaculata University in Chester County, Pa., is offering two new grants to prospective students.
The Be Mighty grant is awarded to students in recognition of their service and engagement during high school. Up to 40 full-time freshman or transfer students may apply. Students must have participated in two or more clubs, extracurricular or service activities within their school or community during their four years in high school. Awardees will receive $2,000 per year for four years, $8,000 total.
The Catholic School Grant is awarded to graduates of Catholic high schools and is open to first-time, full-time freshman students. Awardees will receive $2,000 per year for four years, $8,000 total.

Ronald McDonald House offering college scholarships
Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Philadelphia Region will award scholarships to 55 students in the area this year. Qualified students are encouraged to apply for one of the four scholarships. One of the awards is open to all high school seniors; the other three are restricted to African-American, Latino and Asian students.
The grants range from $2,000 to $5,000. Recipients will be notified over the summer. Students who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, community involvement and financial need are eligible.
