CLAYMONT – Archmere, which won just two games all last season, got off to a positive start this year with a 7-0 field hockey win over Concord Friday afternoon in the season opener for both teams. The Auks broke open a close matchup with six second-half goals.

Archmere (1-0) had several early chances but couldn’t break through until senior Kennedy Murphy scored off a penalty corner from Lorin Donovan with 19:50 to go in the half. Meanwhile, sophomore goalkeeper Mady McDougal turned away everything the Raiders (0-1) threw at her, posting seven saves in the shutout.

The second half was all Archmere. Junior Leah DaCosta scored her first goal off a feed from Donovan, then DaCosta picked up the assist on Archmere’s next goal, which came off the stick of senior Sarah Bunting. The Auks scored three more times in the next 10 minutes, one from Murphy and two more for DaCosta, who completed the hat trick. Senior Presley Conaty added the final tally in the last minute of the contest.

Archmere is at St. Elizabeth Tuesday at 3:45 p.m., while Concord travels to Middletown on Wednesday to meet the Cavaliers.
