Soccer regular season concludes, while football powers collide at Baynard

It’s crunch time for soccer, as the regular season ends Thursday, and playoff seeding will be announced before the end of the week. The Division II tournament begins Saturday, with St. Mark’s and Archmere likely participants. The Division I tournament, headed by Salesianum, kicks off next week. Football, meanwhile, features a matchup of two of the state’s best in a highly anticipated matchup.

St. Elizabeth (7-6) at Glasgow (4-7-2), 3:30 p.m. The Vikings can clinch a winning record with a victory this afternoon.
Ss. Peter and Paul at Severn, 3:30 p.m.
Archmere (8-3-2) at Newark Charter (8-4-1), 3:45 p.m. A challenging week for the Auks kicks off when they travel to meet the Patriots. Archmere is unbeaten in its last eight matches, while Newark Charter has won two straight after a two-game losing streak.
Tuesday
Sussex Central (9-4) at St. Mark’s, (8-5-1) 3:45 p.m. The Spartans have been alternating wins and losses the past few weeks, and to finish the regular season on the right side, they must defeat a solid Golden Knights team. Central has won six in a row.
Wednesday
St. Elizabeth at Christiana, 3:45 p.m.
Archmere at Salesianum (13-1), 7 p.m. at Baynard Stadium.

Friday
Smyrna (6-2) at Salesianum (5-3), 7:30 p.m. One of the most highly anticipated matchups on the high school sports schedule has arrived. The Sals and Eagles have had a spirited rivalry over the past few years, with Smyrna currently owning a two-game win streak. Last season, Smyrna jumped on Salesianum early and went undefeated on the way to its second consecutive state championship. In 2015, the teams met twice. The first was an epic 76-56 Sallies win at Baynard Stadium, a game that featured 19 touchdowns, and the second was a 32-26 overtime affair that gave the Eagles their first state title. No tickets will be sold at Baynard Stadium, so check with the schools for availability.
