MILLTOWN – In Pike Creek, St. Mark’s opens with a new coach for the fourth straight season. Veteran coach Scott Barker takes over a team that went 7-13 in 2015-16 and was 0-6 in the Catholic Conference.
Junior Kendra Schweizer will run things from the point, and she will get help from senior Emily Coyle and juniors Angel Lorang, Kara Dougherty and Nat Alessandrini. Barker expects contributions as well from sophomores Kayla Wolff and Delaney Carey, and junior Paige Thomas is a newcomer with great potential.
Barker said consistency will bring the Spartans back into the conversation in Delaware girls basketball.
“Win or lose, we need to become more consistent and be a more competitive team against everyone on our schedule,” Barker said. “In doing so, we will win more games.”
St. Mark’s will face some tests as they try to improve. The Spartans have to get through their Catholic Conference schedule, along with a season-opening visit to Archmere on Thursday at 6:15 p.m., plus trips to Concord and Caesar Rodney, and home matchups against William Penn and Conrad.
Barker said the team’s first goal is to finish with a winning record, then to qualify for the state tournament, where anything can happen.
“We have a tough schedule and every game will be a battle. We are looking forward to getting started,” he said.
