Ss. Peter and Paul students serve others
EASTON, Md. – The prekindergarten through second grades at Ss. Peter and Paul School in Easton, Md., made more than 100 autumn wreaths for Maryland’s recent “Day to Serve.”
The students prayed over the wreaths, which were made from paper plates, construction paper, tissue paper and gemstones. The wreaths were then delivered to residents at the Talbot Hospice House, the Pines Nursing Home, the Gardens Nursing Home and the Caroline Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
CYM to honor 1964 football champions on Nov. 9
On Sunday, Nov. 9, Catholic Youth Ministry will hold its annual football championships at St. Mark’s High School. As part of the festivities, CYM will honor the members of the 1964 St. Elizabeth Vikings who won the title that year.
The game begins at 7 p.m., and the recognition will take place at halftime. St. Elizabeth mock trial team returns from Massachusetts
WILMINGTON – The mock trial team from St. Elizabeth High School traveled to Cambridge, Mass., Oct. 3-5 to participate in the Harvard Mock Trial High School Seminar Program.
Two faculty members and seven students attended the seminar, which included a tour of Harvard University and time in neighboring Boston. The students were seniors Conor Naughton and Greg Williams, juniors Nathaniel Kohl and Doreen Liu, sophomore Grace Morrison and freshmen Theresa O’Connor and Francis Doran.
In mock trial, teams must be able to prepare for a trial and know how to deviate from a plan and think on their feet. Students play roles such as lawyer and witness. The program at Harvard included interactive lectures by the university’s competitors and breakout sessions.
The Delaware Mock Trial competition will take place in Wilmington in February.
Vikings explore the sweet side of chemistry
WILMINGTON – Ninety-two St. Elizabeth High School students recently participated in a Chemistry Club lab experiment to celebrate National Chemistry Week. The students completed in 40 minutes a lab entitled “The Sweet Side of Chemistry – Candy,” which showcased the chemistry involved in candy and confections.
The students learned about solubility and insolubility, building an awareness of chemistry with familiar items. The lab and Chemistry Club also show them the value of chemistry in everyday life.
Padua alumna wins bioscience fellowship
Hannah Anderson, a 2011 graduate of Padua Academy, was recently awarded the Delaware Governor’s Bioscience Fellowship Award, which supports summer research projects for Delaware undergraduates who hope to pursue a career in a STEM field.
Anderson is a biological sciences student at the University of Delaware with a 4.0 grade-point average. She spent her summer researching “Screening Anti-L1 Monoclonal Antibodies and Receptor-Specific Inhibitors in vitro.”
She was honored at a ceremony with Gov. Jack Markell at the Hotel duPont.
Padua students make dresses for African girls
WILMINGTON – Students in Padua’s textile and clothing I and the fashion design and construction classes have been working on a service project using their clothing construction skills. Each student has been challenged to create a little girl’s dress for the Little Dresses for Africa project.
The project was founded in 2008 as a Christian organization whose mission is to provide relief to children in Africa and beyond. A group of women on a mission in Malawi saw the tattered dresses on the children there and launched Little Dresses for Africa.
As part of the class, speakers from Urban Promise Wilmington spoke at Padua about their mission trip to Malawi. Vanessa Church, Deborah Holcombe and Kristin Walker also showed a multimedia presentation about their travels.
