Holy Cross holding shoe drive
DOVER – Holy Cross School has a home for those shoes in your closet that are no longer wanted. The school recently launched a shoe drive to collect 1,000 pairs of shoes to help the poor. Used and new shoes can be dropped off at several locations on the Dover campus.
The shoes will be delivered to Soles4Shoes, an international anti-poverty organization that monetizes used shoes and clothing to create sustainable jobs and fund direct relief efforts. Founded in 2006, Soles4Shoes has distributed more than 26 million pairs of shoes in 127 countries.
The drive will continue until Dec. 9. Holy Cross is located at 631 S. State St., Dover.
Ss. Peter and Paul has new logo, website
EASTON, Md. – Ss. Peter and Paul Parish and its schools in Easton, Md., have spent the past year creating a new look. Recently, it launched SabreNet, a new content management system to organize and coordinate all of its departments and activities.
Jake Conlon, a junior at Ss. Peter and Paul High School, submitted the winning entry for the new name. The competition, which was open to middle and high school students, drew more than 50 entries. Students in the high school came up with the idea of a naming contest.

St. Matthew’s group cooks for Ronald McDonald House
WILMINGTON – A group of religious-education students and some of their parents visited the Ronald McDonald House in Wilmington on Nov. 1 to prepare breakfast for the home’s residents.
Students determined the menu, purchased and prepared the food, cleaned the kitchen and finally sat down to eat. Approximately 20 people staying at the Ronald McDonald House and four contractors renovating the facility partook.
St. Matthew’s seventh grade does this activity in the fall, and the eighth grade in the spring. The parish has been providing breakfast for more than 13 years.
Holy Cross Knitting Club works with Knights
DOVER – The Knitting Club at Holy Cross School and the Knights of Columbus are teaming up for a community outreach initiative next week in Dover.
Club members will present 40 hats to the Knights on Dec. 4 and 40 more to the Kent County Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 850 Outreach Group as the winter cold sets in. The veterans will use the hats for the homeless during the Code Purple initiative, while the Knights’ hats will be given out at the InterFaith Men’s Shelter on Loockerman Street on Dec. 22 during the Knights’ monthly volunteer effort serving dinners.
The Knitting Club also donated 50 hats and three turkeys to deserving families on Nov. 24 at the Dover Boys and Girls Club. On Dec. 12, members will attend the annual Alex’s Lemonade Stand charity Christmas party in Philadelphia, where approximately 100 knitted caps will go to childhood cancer heroes.
The Holy Cross Knitting Club, featured in The Dialog last December, was recognized as Dover’s top community service project by the city in April. There are 36 first- to eighth-graders in the club.
Sabres earn honors in soccer, field hockey
EASTON, Md. – Five members of the girls’ soccer team and four from the boys’ team at Ss. Peter and Paul High School in Easton, Md., have received all-conference honors for the 2015 season. Maryland holds girls soccer in the fall.
Sophomore Caroline Murphy and senior Riley DeTar were named to the Eastern Shore Interscholastic Athletic Conference first team. Senior Perry Summers and juniors Jenn Douglas and Samantha Kyle are on the second team.
The Sabres reached the conference title game, falling to Worcester (Md.) Prep.
For the boys, junior Eric Peterson and sophomores Li Hicks, Quinn Chambers and Dominic DeLuca were named to the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B all-conference team.
Seven players on the Sabres’ field hockey team were recognized by the ESIAC. Senior Olivia Webb was the conference player of the year and a first-team selection. She will be playing next season at St. Francis University. Joining her on the all-ESIAC first team were juniors Conner Allen and Megan Beane, and sophomore Meddie Boehm. Senior Allison McLaughlin and sophomores Sarah Morris and Maggie Parchman made the second team, and junior Madison Marciniak received honorable mention.
The Sabres reached the ESIAC semifinals this season.
Catholic school students named to philanthropy board
Six students from Catholic high schools in the Diocese of Wilmington are among the 26 high school students who have been named to the Delaware Community Foundation’s Youth Philanthropy Board for New Castle County.
The DCF provides the students with $15,000 to distribute to local charities. The board must choose a focus area, solicit and review grant applications, conduct site visits, and decide how to award money to have the greatest impact.
The Catholic school students are St. Elizabeth junior Jake Barks, Padua senior Marguerite Beane, Salesianum senior Patrick Lyons, Ursuline senior Katie Hosey, St. Mark’s junior Joseph White and Archmere senior Laura Williams.
Grant applications are being accepted through Dec. 15. Applications and more information are available at www.delcf.org/grants. New Castle County schools and qualified 501(c)(3) nonprofits are eligible. Requests for up to $2,500 will be accepted.
St. Edmond’s honors first responders
WILMINGTON – First responders from Wilmington, New Castle County and the state were honored at a Thanksgiving Day liturgy at St. Edmond’s Academy on Nov. 24.
Police, firefighters, EMTs and a federal marshal were the guests of honor at the morning Mass. They dressed in their uniforms and enjoyed refreshments afterward.
Ice hockey returns to Ss. Peter and Paul
EASTON, Md. – After a two-year hiatus, boys ice hockey has returned to Ss. Peter and Paul High School in Easton, Md. A rise in popularity among students at the school led to the team’s reincarnation.
The Sabres are playing in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference under first-year head coach Greg Beane. They tied Kent Island High School in their first game, 6-6, at their home arena, the Talbot County Community Center, then defeated Glenelg, 9-4, for their first conference win in three years.
The team is comprised of one senior, four juniors, four sophomores and three freshmen.
