St. Mark’s wins Del. Mock Trial title

WILMINGTON — St. Mark’s High School defeated 24 other schools, including six-time defending champion Charter School of Wilmington, in the 21st annual Delaware High School Mock Trial competition last month at the New Castle County Courthouse.

The competition consisted of two preliminary rounds, then the final round. In the preliminary rounds, senior Matthew Conrad was awarded three gavels for best attorney, and three students — junior John Slights, junior Michael Williams and senior Brian Coyle — each won a gavel for best witness.

Conrad and Slights each won a gavel in the final round for best attorney and best witness, respectively.

This was St. Mark’s 10th Mock Trial title. The team will represent Delaware at the National High School Mock Trial competition in Albuquerque, N.M., in May.

 

Young Ursuline students help collect shoes for Haiti

WILMINGTON – The Montessori class at Ursuline Academy, consisting of 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds, helped organize a recent shoe drive for students in Haiti through the local nonprofit Shoes 2 Share.

Approximately 600 pairs of shoes were donated by students in the Lower School. Once all the shoes were collected, the Montessori students and their counterparts in third grade tied them together and counted the pairs.

Local Catholic school students contribute to field hockey club success

A local club field hockey team recently returned from the USA Field Hockey National Indoor Tournament in Richmond, Va., with a first-place trophy, and several members of the squad are students at diocesan Catholic elementary schools.

The Delaware Sharks U14 team ran through the tournament with six wins and a tie, scoring 21 goals while allowing only three. During their indoor regular season, the Sharks participated in seven tournaments, winning 24 games and losing three with a tie.

Players from Catholic schools are Abigail McGowan (Immaculate Heart of Mary), Maia Lee (St. Peter the Apostle), Hailey Power (St. Elizabeth), Molly Bobjak (St. Anthony of Padua), Anna Yacucci (All Saints) and Caroline Steele (Ursuline). The coaches are Laura Lee and Eileen Steele.

The Delaware Sharks Field Hockey Club, which practices in Newark, has about 100 members ages 5-18.

 

A Rose and a Prayer sponsors video contest

WILMINGTON – A Rose and a Prayer Education Group, a local pro-life organization, is sponsoring a video contest for teens and young adults.

The theme of the contest is “How I Experienced God in Time of Trouble.” There is a category for 14- to 18-year-olds and another for 19 to 24. The videos should express the entrants’ faith experience at the time of the worst experience in their lives. Submissions must be a maximum of two minutes, and multiple entries are allowed.

Two prizes will be awarded in each age category. The first prize is $500, second prize is $300, and third prize is $100. Selected videos will be used in A Rose and a Prayer’s peer evangelization program course DVDs. The deadline for submission is 11 p.m. on May 15, and winners will be announced by June 15.

Knights announce chess tournament winners

St. John the Beloved and Immaculate Heart of Mary were the team winners in the ninth annual Knights of Columbus Catholic Youth Chess Tournament, which was held March 24 at the St. Pius X Council Home in Wilmington. A total of 64 players representing 10 Catholic schools, parishes and religious education programs were registered.

K-3: 1. St. John the Beloved. 2. St. Joseph on the Brandywine. 3. Immaculate Heart of Mary.

K-6: 1. Immaculate Heart of Mary. 2. St. John the Beloved. 3. Our Lady of Fatima.

Most Blessed Sacrament students hold Stations

BERLIN, Md. – The students at Most Blessed Sacrament School in Berlin, Md., prayed the Stations of the Cross on Friday, March 30, led by Father Anthony Cardone of St. Luke’s-St. Andrew’s Parish in Ocean City, Md.
