Salesianum senior a National Merit winner
WILMINGTON – Jonathan Parmer, a senior at Salesianum School, was named a corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship winner, the only student from Delaware to gain that honor in the latest round of scholarships.
Approximately 1,000 high school seniors received awards from some 200 corporations. Corporate sponsors provide funds for the children of their employees, residents of the community they serve, or students who plan to pursue careers the sponsor wishes to encourage.
Parmer received a scholarship from the Siemens Corp., which makes electrical and electronic components, systems and instruments. Parmer’s expected field of study is engineering. The amount of his scholarship was not disclosed.
St. Thomas More senior receives leadership scholarship
MAGNOLIA – Jessica Rider, a senior at St. Thomas More Academy in Magnolia, has received the Felix Hintemeyer Catholic Leadership Award at Belmont Abbey College in Charlotte, N.C., which she will attend beginning this fall. The award is worth up to $17,000 each year and is renewable.
Rider, a member of Holy Cross Parish in Dover, has been a confirmation leader for three years and serves in campus ministry at St. Thomas More. She also has volunteered for the Catholic Heart Work Camp in Charleston, S.C., for three years and will again this summer.
St. Elizabeth student wins in national essay contest
WILMINGTON – St. Elizabeth High School sophomore Marissa Janicki has been named a state winner in the Letters About Literature national essay contest, which was sponsored locally by the Delaware Division of Libraries and nationally by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress. Her entry has been submitted to the national round of competition.
The program invites readers in grades 4-12 to write a personal letter to an author, living or dead, from any genre, explaining how that author’s work changed the student’s way of thinking about the world or him or herself.
All Saints wins both titles at Knights’ track meet
WILMINGTON – All Saints won both the boys’ and girls’ competitions at the 43rd annual Knights of Columbus Track Meet, April 21 at Baynard Stadium in Wilmington. The boys’ team finished ahead of Holy Angels and St. Edmond’s, while the girls were followed by St. Peter Cathedral and St. Mary Magdalen.
Two Catholic Youth Ministry records were set at the meet. Lydia Olivere of St. Mary Magdalen took first place in the girls’ 800-meter run for grades 4-6 with a time of 2:27.2. Michael Flanagan of All Saints won the boys’ seventh- and eighth-grade 800-meter run in a record time of 2:06.3.
The Michael J. Thornton Awards for best overall performance went to Joel Miller, and eighth-grader who runs for Holy Angels, and Taliah Cintron, a seventh-grader on the St. Peter Cathedral team.
Sallies’ grad honored by St. Joe’s basketball
PHILADELPHIA – Taylor Trevisan, a junior on the St. Joseph’s University men’s basketball team, received the Patrick D. O’Pake Unsung Hero Award at the school’s annual basketball awards banquet. Trevisan, of West Chester, Pa., is a 2009 graduate of Salesianum School in Wilmington.
The sports marketing major made the team as a sophomore as a walk-on but earned a scholarship this past season. At Salesianum, Trevisan was a first-team all-Catholic selection and averaged 15 points per game as a senior.
St. Elizabeth grad honored by foundation
Shyneice Porter, a 2010 graduate of St. Elizabeth High School in Wilmington, has received a $5,000 scholarship from the Lagrant Foundation, which presents the awards to ethnic minority students pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees in advertising, marketing and public relations. Porter, a public relations and psychology major at Syracuse University, is one of just 16 undergrads from across the country to receive the scholarship.
The awards will be presented May 21 at a reception in Washington, D.C. The mission of the Lagrant Foundation is to create diversity in the communications industry by increasing the number of students in those fields.
