Padua senior named a top 10 volunteer
Pearce Quesenberry, a senior at Padua Academy, has been named one of America’s top 10 youth volunteers of 2015 by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. This follows her selection as one of Delaware’s top two youth volunteers a few months ago by the same organization.
Quesenberry was honored May 4 at a ceremony at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C. She and the other students were selected based on initiative, effort, impact and the personal growth demonstrated in the course of their volunteer service. Each received a $5,000 award, engraved gold medallions, crystal trophies for their schools and a $5,000 grant from the Prudential Foundation for the charity of their choice.
Quesenberry, 17, is a brain cancer survivor who is the key figure in the Pearce Q Foundation, a nonprofit that has raised more than $100,000 over the past six years to increase awareness of childhood cancer, help fund the search for a cure, and ease the financial pressure on families of young cancer patients.
Padua senior signs Division I volleyball scholarship
WILMINGTON – Haley Baker, a senior at Padua Academy, has signed with Southeastern Louisiana University on a full volleyball scholarship. The Lions play in the Division I Southland Conference.
Baker was a big part of the Pandas’ success over the past four seasons. Padua won two state championships and reached the semifinals the other two years. As a senior, she was named first team all-state and All-Catholic Conference. She earned second-team All-Catholic honors after her sophomore and junior seasons.
She played club volleyball for the Delaware Juniors.
Archmere senior wins Merit Scholarship
Meibin Chen, a senior at Archmere Academy, has been named one of five National Merit Scholarship winners in the latest round announced by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Her one-time $2,500 award will come from the corporation’s funds.
Chen, from Newark, has listed biomedical engineering as the probably career field.
Approximately 2,500 Merit Scholar designees were selected in this round from a pool of more than 15,000 finalists. The number of winners from each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of graduating seniors. The scholars were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors based on a number of criteria.
College-sponsored Merit Scholarship winners will be announced May 27 and July 13.
St. Elizabeth student graduates from leadership program
WILMINGTON – Brian Marchioni, a junior at St. Elizabeth High School, graduated from the Delaware Youth Leadership Network on April 26. The organization, founded in 2012, selects high school juniors to be DYLN Scholars for a nine-month program the includes inspirational speakers, mentors and skills development.
Marchioni has had an adult business leader as a mentor throughout the year and has participated in several workshops.
