Alex Thomas, the senior forward for the St. Elizabeth girls’ basketball team, scored her 1,000th career point Feb. 19 in a home game against Glasgow. Thomas scored 30 in the Vikings’ 71-17 win, with the last two putting her at exactly 1,000.
The game was stopped briefly as Thomas was honored, along with her parents, Jen and Jeff. Coach Dan Cooney presented her with the game ball.
Thomas is a four-year starter for the Vikings. She is averaging 17.9 points per game, having been held to single digits just once. That came in a blowout win over Cape Henlopen, when the starters were out of the game early. She was named to the all-tournament team at the most recent Diamond State Classic, which attracts some of the country’s best teams.
St. Elizabeth reached the state semifinal round her freshman year, won the championship when she was a sophomore and was back in the title game again last season. This year, St. Elizabeth finished the regular season 14-6 and is ranked third. The team’s only in-state losses came to top-ranked Ursuline (twice), second-ranked Sanford and No. 5 Caravel. They defeated Caravel in a rematch.
Off the court, Thomas is a Eucharistic minister, Viking Ambassador and vice president of the school’s National Honor Society chapter, and she is a member of the Blue-Gold Club, the Math League and the DIAA Leadership Conference. She also plays soccer and was third-team all-state last season and first-team all-Catholic Conference.
