CLAYMONT — Top-ranked Cape Henlopend found itself trailing No. 2 Archmere, 4-1, with 10 minutes remaining in the first half of Saturday afternoon’s girls lacrosse showdown in Claymont. But senior Allie Yeager added two goals, including one that would tie the game at four at halftime, and the Vikings opened it up in the second half for a 13-7 win.
Archmere took its last lead at 5-4 five minutes into the second half as junior Elisabeth Schlitz scored her second goal of the game, but the Vikings would tie it up again a few minutes later on a score by junior Jordan Brown. Yeager gave Cape its first lead of the contest less than a minute later, connecting for the hat trick.
The Auks would not fold, knotting it at six when sophomore Presley Conaty found the net, but the Vikings took the lead for good a minute later and scored seven of the game’s last eight tallies in the final 12 minutes.
Cape Henlopen, the five-time defending state champions, held Archmere’s Kate Payne and Amanda Olsen to a total of three goals, well below their season average.
The Auks lost for the first time in five games and are off until Friday, when they host Polytech (5-0) at 3:45 p.m. Cape is now 4-0 and travels to New Castle County again on Wednesay for a 5:30 p.m. matchup with St. Mark’s, which is 2-1.
