A great stretch of basketball, held up by more snow but ending with another version of the holy war between St. Mark’s and Salesianum, leads into another action-packed week around the state. Let’s look at the boys’ schedule, including a matchup of the top two teams in Delaware.
Monday: St. Elizabeth at St. Mark’s, 7:15 p.m.: The Spartans played Salesianum tough on the road on Friday and now look for another home win. St. Elizabeth upset No. 4 Archmere on Thursday, but lost to Charter two days later. St. Mark’s will honor retired longtime athletic director Tom Rosa during this game.
Tuesday: St. Thomas More at McKean, 5 p.m.: The Ravens are 3-10 and look to end a six-game losing streak against the 2-8 Highlanders, who have lost four straight themselves.
Archmere at Caravel, 7:15 p.m.: The Auks bounced back from that loss to St. Elizabeth with a big win over Tower Hill on Friday. Caravel is 2-9 and has dropped seven straight.
Sanford at Salesianum, 7:30 p.m.: The Sals host their second big home game in a row as they host the top-ranked Warriors. Neither team has lost to an in-state opponent. Sanford will play its first game since Jan. 18, having had three games postponed last week because of weather. The game will feature Sanford’s big guns, Anthony Mosley and Todd Hughes, against Salesianum standout Donte DiVincenzo. Get there early to find parking and a seat as it is sure to be sold out.
Thursday: St. Mark’s at Archmere, 6:15 p.m. The Spartans look for revenge against the Auks, who beat them, 44-39, at St. Mark’s on Dec. 19. Each team, both ranked in the top five in the state, hopes to add a resume-building win for the state tournament.
St. Elizabeth at Salesianum, 7:30 p.m. The Sals look to sweep the Vikings after a 46-28 win at the St. E Center on Jan. 10.
Friday: Delmarva Christian at St. Thomas More, 5:30 p.m. This will be Delmarva Christian’s third game in four days; the Royals had lost five straight heading into the week.
Saturday: Delaware Military at Archmere, 1:15 p.m. The Auks go for the sweep against DMA, having taken a 10-point win on Jan. 10. DMA entered the week 8-4.
William Penn at St. Mark’s, 1:30 p.m.: These teams were supposed to meet in their season openers, but an early snowstorm postponed it until this day. Penn is 3-4 and will be playing a lot of games in the coming weeks.
Smyrna at St. Elizabeth, 1:30 p.m.: The Vikings’ third game this week is against an up-and-down Smyrna team that has played many of the top teams in Delaware.
There is also some good action on the girls’ side.
Tuesday: St. Thomas More at Archmere, 6:15 p.m. This is a rematch of a Diamond State Athletic Conference game 11 days ago that was taken by Archmere, 51-21. Archmere is coming off a narrow two-point win over Conrad on Friday. The Ravens have not played since then.
St. Mark’s at St. Elizabeth, 7:30 p.m. The Vikings defeated Padua on Friday night and Episcopal Academy on Sunday to get back on the winning track, while St. Mark’s lost to Caravel, 30-24, on Saturday.
Thursday: St. Elizabeth at Sussex Central, 6 p.m. This will be the third game of the week for Sussex Central, which entered Monday at 6-3. It will be a tough road match for St. Elizabeth.
Friday: Archmere at St. Andrew’s, 4 p.m.: The Saints were 5-4 heading into a game Tuesday, while Archmere could use the win to help its tournament seeding.
St. Thomas More at Delmarva Christian, 5:45 p.m. The Ravens and Royals meet in a DSAC game.
Ursuline at St. Mark’s, 7:15 p.m. The Spartans continue a stretch of games against the top teams in the state, meeting Ursuline after taking on Caravel, then St. Elizabeth. Ursuline is playing its best basketball of the season.
Saturday: Archmere at Wilmington Christian, 1:30 p.m. Both teams will be playing their second game in less than 24 hours. Wilmington Christian was 8-4 heading into a game Friday vs. Conrad and ends a six-game home stand against Archmere.
Padua at the Hun School (N.J.), 2 p.m.: Padua has been off since a loss to St. Elizabeth that stopped a four-game win streak. This will be the third game of the week for the Hun School, which is located in Princeton. Like a nearby Padua rival school, Hun’s teams are nicknamed the Raiders and wear red and black.
