Catholic Youth Ministry recently completed its football and soccer seasons with championship games on Nov. 13. The football games were held at Baynard Stadium in Wilmington, while the soccer matches took place at A.I. DuPont High School, also in Wilmington. All results were provided by the CYM office.
Football
Diocesan championship: Holy Angels drove 70 yards for the winning touchdown in the game’s final 28 seconds to defeat St. John the Beloved, 38-30, in an offensive matchup. After the Angels scored on their first possession to take an 8-0 lead, St. John’s responded with 22 unanswered points before halftime. Holy Angels stormed back in the second half, scoring 22 straight points to lead, 30-22, but the Eagles tied the game at 30 with under a minute remaining in regulation. In the third-place game, St. Mary of the Assumption defeated Immaculate Heart of Mary, 26-14.
Division II: St. Margaret of Scotland scored on touchdown runs of 32 yards by Anthony Hannum and 48 yards by Frankie Datillo in a 22-12 win over St. Elizabeth. Datillo also threw a scoring pass of 36 yards to Max Somelofske.
Soccer
Diocesan championship: It took a shootout, but St. Mary Magdalen outlasted St. Edmond’s Academy, 4-3, for the title. The teams ended regulation tied, 1-1, on a first-half goal for Brian Shannon of St. Mary Magdalen and the equalizer by Cole Bouchard in the second half. Neither team scored in either of the five-minute overtime periods, but Shannon, Christian Viera and William Connelly connected in the shootout for St. Mary Magdalen. The shootout goal-scorers for St. Edmond’s were Jason Blackwell and Sean Murray.
Y Division: St. Anthony of Padua edged St. Peter the Apostle, 1-0, for the win. Molly Bobjak netted the lone goal at 43:50. Keeper Sean Setting had four saves for the shutout, while Ryan Will also had four saves for St. Peter’s.
O Division: Jacob Flowers ended the scoring drought at 58:57 as St. Ann’s defeated St. Helena’s, 1-0. St. Ann’s Austin Macha stopped 10 shots, while Joshua Pearsall had eight saves for St. Helena’s.
