BEAR – St. Georges scored three first-half goals and held off pesky St. Elizabeth in a 4-1 win in the first round of the Division II boys soccer playoffs Wednesday night at Caravel Academy.

The 11th-seeded Vikings controlled the first 15 minutes of play but could manage just one shot. The tide changed in the 20th minute when Mitch Moran blasted a 30-yard laser past the St. Elizabeth keeper into the left corner of the net. Moran struck again eight minutes later when he put a loose ball into the back of the net.

soccerMoran assisted on the third goal for the No. 6 Hawks, as his free kick from 40 yards was headed in by Matt Mitchell.

The Vikings turned up the pressure in the second half, and in the 72nd minute Martin Newswanger scored. St. Elizabeth had a golden chance two minutes later, but a shot sailed high. The Hawks’ Wade Draper added a late goal as St. Georges advances to the quarterfinals on Saturday at 5 p.m. vs. Tower Hill at Appoquinimink High School.

St. Elizabeth finished the season at 8-8.
