Balanced Sals cruise in football home opener

WILMINGTON – Salesianum, ranked second in the state in Division I by 302Sports.com, finally got to play at home after three long weeks on the road, and they didn’t disappoint their fans in a 42-0 win over Urbana (Md.) on Sept. 30. Quarterback Zach Gwynn threw for three touchdowns while fullback Garret Million and wide receiver Sean Regan found the end zone twice.

The Sals scored on their first drive as they traveled 65 yards – mostly on the ground until Gwynn hit Million on his first pass of the game for a 19-yard score. The Sals’ defense then forced a three-and-out, and the Sals offense responded again. ,This time they used a balanced drive, and Jesse Wheatley scored on a one-yard scamper to make it 14-0.
The hosts scored again on their third possession, this one a 60-yard drive capped by a four-yard TD run by Million. The Sals were not done for the half as they put together a great hurry-up drive. Gwynn found Regan in the back corner of the end zone with a six-yard touchdown pass on third-and-goal. Regan managed to sneak one foot inbounds while making the acrobatic catch.

The Sals continued their impressive performance into the second half. They picked off a pass at their own 5-yard line on The Sals then picked off a pass on Urbana’s first drive of the third quarter and went 95 yards. The last 60 came on two great catches by Regan. First, he outleaped a defender to haul in a 56-yard pass, then made a diving catch on the next play for a 35-0 lead.
Salesianum (3-1) has started its four-game homestand on the right foot, but they have three straight tough opponents coming to Baynard Stadium. The first is Episcopal Academy (Pa.) next Saturday night at 7:30.
