MILLTOWN – A day after knocking off No. 2 Polytech, the third-ranked Ursuline lacrosse team met No. 4 St. Mark’s on April 4. As in the Polytech game, the Raiders (5-0) jumped out to a 7-1 lead and held on for a 13-12 road victory to remain undefeated. Erin O’Doherty and Brooke Schmeusser scored five times each for the Raiders, including combining for three in a row after St. Mark’s tied it at nine in the second half.
The Spartans scored first, with Kendra Schweizer connecting less than a minute in, but the Raiders responded with the next seven goals in a 16-minute span. Schmeusser scored first to tie the contest, and O’Doherty tallied the next three to make it 4-1 Ursuline with 14:55 left in the first half. Schmuesser added two more sandwiched around a Jane Lyons goal for the 7-1 lead.
The Spartans got the next three as Schweizer scored, followed by Paige Megargee and Megan Noonan. The Raiders got a goal by Jordan Kenney with five seconds left to give them an 8-4 halftime lead.
The Spartans scored the first two of the second half as Noonan scored, and Kayla Wolff cut the Raiders’ lead to 8-6. After a Raiders goal, the Spartans scored the next three to knot it at nine with 15:47 left.
Schumusser found the net to give Ursuline the lead again, and O’Doherty added two for a 12-9 lead. Megargee cut the lead to two with 10:29 left, but Schmeusser made it 13-10 lead with 8:40 left. Megargee would add two more and had a great shot that would have tied the contest with 15 seconds left, but goalie Brigid Monahan turned her away. Monahan had nine saves.
The Raiders will play three other Ursuline schools in New York this weekend. The Spartans (4-1) got four goals each from Magargee and Noonan, while Schweizer added three. They travel to Red Lion on Thursday for a 4 p.m. faceoff.
