Raiders rally for overtime lacrosse win at No. 5 Caravel

BEAR – Brooke Schmeusser scored 23 seconds into overtime to lead Ursuline past fifth-ranked Caravel, 13-12, on March 28. The Raiders were down, 10-6, late in the second half but rallied for the key nonconference win.

The Buccaneers scored first, and a Maia Bryson goal gave them an early 3-1 lead. The Raiders answered with the next two goals, one by Jane Lyons and the other by Katherine Shroyer. The Bucs regained the lead on a goal by Olivia Duarte for a 4-3 lead with 11:02 left in the first half. The Raiders picked up the next two, taking their first lead at 5-4 with 6:28 left. Caravel, however, finished the first half with the final three goals, two by Duarte and the last one by Lauren Phillips. It was 7-5 at the half.
The Buccaneers scored two quick goals to start the second half to lead 9-5. Lyons tallied for the Raiders but Duarte quickly answered with her fourth. Ursuline then went on a, cutting the deficit in half on a goal by Shannon O’Doherty with 7:21 left. Phillips got one back for the Buccaneers less than a minute later. The Raiders then got hot on offense, scoring four times, with Schmeusser giving them a 12-11 lead with 1:02 left.
UALax2The lead was short-lived, as Duarte found the net with 44 seconds left. Lyons came close at the end of regulation but was stopped by Darcy Judd.
Schmeusser was happy with the team’s defense. “I think our defense saved us, and without them we wouldn’t have been able to come back at all.
“It was a great game, we were prepared. The last couple of minutes were intense; we loved it a lot. I think we worked well together and found the open girl.”
The Raiders (3-0) were led by Schmeusser with five goals, while Lyons and O’Doherty added two each. Brigid Monahan had eight big saves in the win. The Raiders host Polytech at 3:45 p.m. next Monday. Duarte finished with seven goals for the Buccaneers. Phillips added four. They host Hodgson on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
