MILLTOWN – St. Mark’s prospects were looking pretty good following a goal in the 70th minute that gave the Spartans a 2-0 lead over visiting St. Georges on Sept. 20, but the Hawks struck twice in the final four minutes of regulation to manage a 2-2 tie in nonconference boys soccer that featured two of the best teams in Division II. Two extra periods were not enough to determine a winner.

Peter Coker scored in the 70th minute to extend the Spartans’ lead. St. Mark’s was forced to play the last 30 minutes of the regulation plus overtime with just 10 men, having lost a defender to a red card in the 50th minute. St. Georges kept St. Mark’s on the defensive throughout the second half, and in the 76th minute, Joshua Moody beat St. Mark’s keeper Thomas Gibb. Two minutes later, David Angulo netted the equalizer.

St. Mark’s (1-0-1) had taken a 1-0 lead in the first half when Ryan Donovan took a throw-in from Chris Ludman and tapped it into the net. Ludman’s throw had gotten by Hawks keeper Troy Fitzgerald to Donovan, who did not miss.

The game was quite physical and featured several yellow cards, including the pair that got the St. Mark’s defender banished. Each team had four corner kicks. Gibb finished with six saves, while Fitzgerald had nine. St. Mark’s plays next on Thursday at Red Lion at 4 p.m., while the Hawks (2-1-1) are home to Howard on Thursday at 3:45 p.m.
