BRANDYWINE HUNDRED – Owen Linkhorst went 3-for-4 to lead Concord past Archmere, 4-3, in nonconference baseball Wednesday afternoon.
Linkhorst opened the seventh with a double, the only extra-base hit of the contest. The Raiders worked the bases loaded before ending the game with a walkoff walk. Concord stopped a two-game losing streak and evened its record at 3-3 with the win.
Linkhorst was instrumental in all of Concord’s offesne. He scored the first run in the bottom of the first. Linkhorst singled to right, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an error by the Auks’ second baseman.
The Raiders were back at it in the third inning. Linkhorst opened the frame with a single behind the second-base bag. R.J. Edelman followed with a grounder to the Archmere first baseman, who stepped on the bag for an out. His throw to second, however, went into left field, allowing Linkhorst to advance to third. Robbie Farnan drove him in with a single to center.
Three batters later, there were runners on first and second with two outs. Dillon Coughenour sent a base hit to center field, bringing Dallas Russell around from second base.
Concord pitcher Edelman had gotten through three innings unscathed, but the Auks finally broke through in the fourth. Colin Lynch opened with a walk, reached third base on a single by Nick Talley and scored on a sacrifice fly by Daniel Matranga. Two more singles, the second by Michael Dellose, scored Talley and left runners on first and second.
Edelman got the second out on a popup and could see his way out of the inning. Tighe Watson, however, had other ideas, knocking in the tying run on the Auks’ fourth single of the inning. Edelman hit the next batter to load the bases, but he induced Joe Singley to fly to center to escape further damage.
Farnan relieved Edelman and threw two shutout innings for the win. Concord is back on the field Thursday at 3:45 p.m. at A.I. duPont.
Dellose took the loss in relief of Andrew Orzel, who went five. Archmere fell to 3-2 after its second consecutive loss, but the Auks won’t have to wait long to try to return to the win column. They play Thursday at Wilmington Christian, also at 3:45 p.m.
