CLAYMONT – Archmere’s girls basketball team played solid defense and received scoring from 10 different players in its 54-25 win over St. Mark’s on Dec. 8 at Moglia Fieldhouse. The Auks improved to 3-0 on the season.
Senior Danaziah Brown scored seven quick points to help key a 10-0 run in the first quarter, giving the Auks a 12-2 lead. It was 13-4 after the first quarter, but they were just getting started.
Freshman Madison Stewart had three points early in the second as part of a 9-0 streak to open the quarter, making it 22-4. Archmere held St. Mark’s without a field goal in the stanza, and it was 27-7 at halftime. The defensive effort was stout, sophomore Catherine McGonigal said.
“We really pride ourselves on our team defense, and in practice we focus on our help defense,” she said.
The Auks scored 22 points in the third, led by Kylie Lutz, who had seven, while Stewart added five. The Spartans found some offense in the quarter, as Kara Dougherty had five and Kendra Schweizer added three. The Auks had the game in hand by then, however, leading 49-20 heading into the fourth.
Lutz led the Auks with nine, while Stewart and Amanda Denning were close behind with eight each. McGonigal, who scored five, talked about the team’s depth.
“We are really deep this year and are getting contributions from freshmen to seniors,” she said.
Archmere hosts Villa Maria Academy (Pa.) on Saturday at 11 a.m. St. Mark’s (0-1) got five points from Dougherty and four from Schweizer. They host Brandywine on Tuesday night at 7:15 p.m.
