WILMINGTON — The 2015-16 season ended prematurely for St. Elizabeth, which went 17-4 but was upset by Conrad in the second round of the state tournament. Coach Dan Cooney looks to have another state title contender this season, as he returns Alanna Speaks, Lexi Bromwell and Alexis Lee, along with contributors Sarah Metz, Dymond Collins and Julie McCarron. A freshman to keep an eye on is Sha’Nia Davis.

basketball“We are a very veteran team this year, with six seniors, two juniors and two freshmen leading the way,” Cooney said. “If this group keeps working hard everyday in practice, I really feel we can get to the state finals.”

The Vikings open Dec. 12 at Caesar Rodney at 7:15 p.m., and the schedule includes some other stiff competition. St. Elizabeth is in the main draw of the Diamond State Classic and also faces Milford, Caravel, Cardinal O’Hara (Pa.) and Archmere in addition to its home-and-home games in the Catholic Conference.

If they need a reminder of what is at stake, they only have to peek at last year’s schedule.

“We have been using last year’s early exit as motivation. The great thing is that the girls have been the ones using it more than me,” Cooney said.
