Force quiets Archmere bats in softball shutout

CLAYMONT – The Wilmington Charter Force scored early and shut down the Archmere Auks’ offense in a 6-0 win on April 11.
The Force scored two runs in the first inning to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Taylor Gillis led off with a double and scored on a Jenna Volker double. Volker came around on a single by Cameron Peters. The Auks got two hits in the bottom of the first as Mackenzie Popp singled and Mady McDougal doubled. Force pitcher Payton Czerwinski, however, got out of the jam with no damage done.

The Force added a run in the second as Ashley Steiner singled home a run. Charter added two more in the fifth on singles by Kate Watson, Czerwinski and Peters, with Watson coming home on a bases-loaded walk. Czerwinski scored on an error to give the Force a 5-0 lead. Maggie Brown and Popp singled for the Auks in the fifth, but they couldn’t get a two-out hit.
Archmere picked up two more hits in the sixth from Kayla Murray and McDougal, but the Force got a 6-4-3 twin killing to escape the jam. Gillis drove in a run in the seventh on a ground out to finish the scoring.
The Auks (4-4) got two hits from McDougal and Popp in the lost. They will host Conrad next Tuesday at noon. The Force (5-1) got four hits from Peters, while Czerwinski added three and picked up her third win of the season. They will travel to Newark on Thursday for a 3:45 p.m. start.
